Presidency releases update on
Mandela
JOHANNESBURG - The Presidency on Saturday said it
did not know when former president Nelson Mandela would be discharge from
hospital.
As yet, the
date of his discharge is unknown.
The
94-year-old has spent the last two weeks at a private hospital in Pretoria.
He is being
treated for a recurring lung infection and went under the knife last week to
have gallstones removed.
The gallstone procedure was via endoscopy.....
President
Jacob Zuma paid Madiba a visit on Saturday and relayed the support South Africa
and the rest of the world has been demonstrating while he has been in hospital.
Presidential spokesperson Mac Maharaj verified
that Mandela was receiving good care being an
unparalleled fighter and has always been so. He has met all his health
challenges with his tremendous fortitude and grace.
The Nobel peace laureate has a long
history of lung problems dating back decades to when he contracted tuberculosis while in jail as a
political prisoner
Madiba has been in hospital since the 8th
December and continues to respond to treatment.
“We urge
South Africans to continue praying for our beloved Madiba during this stressful period.”
Last week,
the South African National Editors Forum (Sanef) expressed its disappointment
in government that failed to follow the protocol initially agreed upon earlier
in the year, regarding updates on Mandela’s health.
Sanef
believed that the public were being misled and let down by government because,
even though Mandela's privacy should be respected, his health is of
public concern.....
